Bruxism – Grinding of teeth

Bruxism. Most of us grind out teeth unconsciously, without being aware of it. Although it’s something people do at all times, Bruxism during sleep is often a bigger problem because it is harder to control.

The main triggers of Bruxism are Repressed Anger, Inability to express feelings, Chronic Stress, Anxiety, Latent subconscious Fears and the desire to maintain a restrained, socially accepted facade, while hiding one’s emotions.

Grinding teeth puts pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around the jaw. The symptoms can cause temporomandibular joint problems (TMJ). Grinding can wear down the teeth. Sometimes it can be noisy enough at night to bother sleeping partners.

Symptoms of bruxism include: Mis-aligned teeth, painful gums, ear-ache (partly because the structures of the temporomandibular joint are very close to the ear canal, and because you can feel pain in a different location than its source; this is called referred pain) Eating disorders, Headaches, Tongue biting and bruises, especially in the morning, Hot, cold, or sweet sensitivity in the teeth, Insomnia, Sore or painful jaws.

And the biggest adverse effect of Bruxism is probably the Fatigue, the Exhaustion one feels due to grinding their teeth all day all night without even knowing what is making them tired.
